You can sense the sweat and tears from outside of the gymnasium, the squeak of rubber and the soft thud of basketballs hitting the floor mixing with a familiar rock tune throughout the large arched ceilings. The year is 1968 and practice has begun at the renowned Pauley Pavilion on the campus of UCLA. Large athletes hurdle themselves down the floor following the rhythm set forth by their coach, meshing and combining forces to create a combination that will live in infamy. |

The UCLA Bruins under the direction of John Wooden are considered one of the true sports dynasties of our time.
The team won 655 games in twelve seasons, 7 seasons of which were consecutive from 1967 to 1973. The Bruins also had a record winning streak of 88 games, four perfect 30-0 seasons, and won 38 straight games in the NCAA Tournament. Perfection. Performance. Success.
There is an interesting correlation drawn between sports dynasties and successful businesses in history. Is there something we can learn from John Wooden of UCLA, Vince Lombardi and the Packers, or Scotty Bowman’s Redwings? What about Bill Gates of Microsoft, Herb Kelleher’s Southwest Airlines, or Howard Schultz of Starbucks? They unified behind a common goal, they used the same language and measurements for success, worked hard and became a constant student of their game! |
